Best Portable Outdoor Speakers

What is an Outdoor Speaker?

Outdoor speakers are designed specifically for use outside. Manufacturers build these speakers with weatherproof features to withstand the challenges of being exposed to the elements. It’s important to note these speakers are not waterproof, they are water resistant. This means they can handle some splashing but direct downpours could damage the speaker. It’s always good to install outdoor speakers under the eaves of your roof or under a covered patio. The speakers will be protected from moisture such as dew and, in some cases, even sea spray and salt fog from the ocean. Check the restrictions from the manufacturer before you purchase outdoor speakers. Especially for installations near the ocean.

Be sure to check out our buyer’s guide at the end of this article for recommendations based on the most common reasons people purchase outdoor speakers.

Portable Outdoor Speakers

Portable outdoor speakers are regular Bluetooth  speakers built to take on the challenges of mother nature. In this section, we have included both compact and larger options, depending on what it is you’re looking for. Most of these speakers are waterproof, however, a couple of options are not. Why would these be included?

While having a waterproof speaker is important for many outdoor applications, often you just need an outdoor Bluetooth speaker with a decent amount of power, especially if you’re looking to get a party going. You may have noticed that your Bluetooth speaker sounds louder inside than it does outside. This is because the sound is contained inside and the sound waves reverberate of the floors, walls and other surfaces which amplifies the sound.

Outside the sound travels further but eventually dissipates as there is nothing to reverberate or bounce off.

This is why it’s important to have a powerful outdoor speaker if your intent is to play loud music outside. All Outdoor speakers are really powerful speakers with excellent sound quality.

One of the more exciting Bluetooth speakers to come out in recent years is the Aiwa Exos-9 Portable Bluetooth Speaker. While it’s not as compact as most would consider a portable Bluetooth speaker to be, the Exos-9 is relatively easy to carry and move around. The Exos-9 might not be compact and lightweight, but it most definitely packs a serious punch!

The Exos-9 features a overall of five speaker drivers including a 6.5” woofer producing a powerful 200W of sound. This is a significant amount of power and will easily fill a medium to large room and even be effective outdoors for parties around the pool or even tailgating.

With the 6.5” subwoofer, the Exos-9 sound warm with a deep, pumping bass sound. The midrange and highs offer excellent clarity. Overall, the Exos-9 is a fun speaker to listen to no matter if it’s a simple podcast or your favorite dance track.

If 200W isn’t enough power, Aiwa has enabled the Exos-9 to be paired with a second Exos-9. Here you have the option of running the speakers in mono or stereo depending on your preference. With two Exos-9 Bluetooth outdoor speakers, you’re sure to get a party started and most likely will get complaints from the entire neighborhood.

The Exos-9 authorize for two audio inputs, Bluetooth and ⅛-inch AUX. The speaker also has an NFC sensor for quick-pairing NFC enabled devices. You can have up to 8 Bluetooth devices paired to the Exos-9 so swapping between devices is quick and easy.

The main controls are located on top of the Exos-9. These include play/pause, EQ adjustment, and LINK to connect two Exos-9 speakers. There is a large rotary knob on the front of the speaker for volume control. Also on the front panel is an LED display which enables you to see which input is selected, the EQ preset, and your remaining battery life.

The Exos-9 built-in battery lasts up to 9 hours depending on the volume and other features you might be running. The Exos-9 is very efficient with conserving battery and will even shut down the LED display and touchpad controls after 15 seconds of not being used. If the Exos-9 is running on battery, the speaker will enter a sleep mode after 15 minutes of no use. Great features to prolong your battery life, especially when you’re away from a socket to charge the speaker. The Exos-9 can also operate while connected to the socket so, if you want the speaker on all day at home, you can just plug it in and you’re good to go.

If you need more battery life, Aiwa sells additional battery packs which are available on their website or via Amazon. The battery is a quick-release so it’s as easy to swap out batteries. In addition, the Exos-9 has a USB charge out so, if you’re taking your outdoor Bluetooth speaker on an adventure, you’ll have a power source to charge your mobile device. Just remember this will run the battery down faster so be sure to pack some extra battery packs for extended trips.

Another cool feature on the Exos-9 is the Bluetooth lock. We’ve all got “that friend” with terrible music taste who’s always trying to take control of the Bluetooth speaker. With the Bluetooth lock, the Exos-9 will only pair to the current device and won’t allow you to pair to additional devices while engaged. Details of how to engage/disengage the Bluetooth lock can be found in the user manual.

The Angle 3 features dual full-range speaker drivers with a bass radiator delivering a punchy 10W of sound. The first thing you’ll notice is the Angle 3 is surprisingly loud for its size. It’s hard to believe something so small has such a big bark. As this is a compact speaker, there isn’t much bass to speak of, however, the Angle 3 does have a nice punchy low-end. The Angle 3 delivers good clarity across the upper frequencies but don’t expect audiophile quality. Having said that, the Angle 3 is a fun speaker to listen to and is perfect as an ultra-compact Bluetooth speaker.

The Angle 3 authorize for both Bluetooth and ⅛-inch AUX audio inputs. Even with its compact size, OontZ has allowed for a small control panel on the side of the Angle 3. • Power Input:-  Unspecified
• Battery Life:- 8hours.
• Inputs:- Bluetooth and 1/8 inch AUX.

Looking for a rugged, palm sized outdoor Bluetooth speaker? Then the Bose SoundLink Color II just might be what you’re looking for. This premium speaker is coated in a silicon rubber material which not only offers protection but also gives the speaker a premium look and feel. If you’re familiar with the original plastic SoundLink Color, you’ll know this silicon finish is a big improvement. Another improvement is that the SoundLink Color II is now waterproof. It’s only an IPX4 rating which protects against water splashes so not good for use in the pool or out on the water (river/lake).
As to be expected from a premium brand like Bose, the SoundLink Color II sounds really good. The low-end is nicely defined and punchy with excellent clarity in the mid-range and high frequencies. For a speaker just a little bigger than your hand, the SoundLink Color II performs surprisingly well. Granted, this isn’t audiophile quality, but for a personal speaker and a bit of fun, you won’t be disappointed. Due to the SoundLink Color II size, the speaker isn’t very powerful so don’t expect to full a room with sound. For a personal speaker or a bit of background music with a couple of friends, the SoundLink Color II performs just fine. If you’re looking for a Bluetooth party speaker, you might want to look at something bigger.
The SoundLink Color II allows for Bluetooth and 1/8-inch AUX audio inputs. For the purposes of waterproofing, most brands hide the 1/8-inch AUX input behind a watertight seal which means you’re unable to use this port around water. The SoundLink Color II AUX port is exposed which means you can use your AUX cable even if there is the change of getting the speaker wet. A small but much-appreciated convenience. The micro USB charging input is also exposed, however, charging the SoundLink Color II around water probably isn’t a great idea. Consult the user manual for all instructions.
On top of the SoundLink Color II is a small control panel. Buttons include power, Bluetooth, input source, volume up, multi-function and volume down. The multi-function button allows you to access many features on your paired Bluetooth device. These include play/pause, track skip, call management and activating voice prompts (Siri, Google Now, etc).
The SoundLink Color II also has voice prompts so you know when features or changes have been confirmed. Bose have translated these into 13 different languages so, if English isn’t your first language, you can always change the SoundLink Color II language to suit your preference. You can also turn off voice prompts completely if they are not needed.
Another improvement over its predecessor is the SoundLink Color II is NFC enabled. This means you can quick-pair using your NFC enabled device simply by tapping the top of the speaker. The on the SoundLink Color II allows you to store up to 8 Bluetooth devices so switching between your various Bluetooth devices is quick and easy. You can also clear the stored memory simply by pressing and holding the Bluetooth button for 10 seconds.
The SoundLink Color II features an 8-hour built-in battery which is more than enough for a full days use. When the battery reaches 10% or, hasn’t been used for three consecutive days, the speaker goes into “battery protection mode” which preserves the battery. Plugging the SoundLink Color II into a power source reverts back to normal operation. The speaker also powers off automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity.
